Happy Spring!!! It’s time to declutter.

If you’re like me, you’re constantly clearing out your closet to make room for new stuff. Or, maybe you still have your plaid bermuda shorts bought from Aeropostale in 2007. Whatever your sitch, time to CLEAN out and MAKE $$$$$$. Everyone feels good after a good clean out, and what better motivation than to get some cash for your old stuff that is useless to you but a treasure to someone else (trust me people like weird shit).

Set aside a good three hours for your closet clean out. You know you’re going to find a little knick knack from your past and be distracted for 30 minutes reminiscing on much simpler times.

K now make 4 piles: Keep, Trash, Consign, Posh. The trash pile is for clothes that are ripped, damaged, dirty, over worn, etc. Throw these in a trash bag and never. see. them. again. (You could also donate to places that are looking for fabrics).

The consign pile is for clothes that are still in great condition, but are not the latest trends or NWT (New with tags). Consignment shops love random articles of clothing that are back in style or “brand name”, even if they are ugly and you don’t know why you bought them in the first place. If you google “consignment shops near me”, a whole list will pop up. They are everywhere. Find out if they are accepting clothes and bring ’em on down. No need to wash them, iron them, fold them nicely, NOTHING. You go and bring them the clothes, they pick what they are going to sell, and hand you back the rest. The ones that they do not choose to sell, take right on over to a donation bin and they are off your hands for a good cause!

The keep pile is pretty self-explanatory — anything you see yourself wearing within the next year. When I put the clothes back into my closet, I like to organize them by color because I’m weird, but it does look good and I know where everything is! Another trick is to turn all of your hangers around “backwards” and then when you wear something, flip the hanger. When you Spring clean again next year, all of the items that are still on “backwards” hangers are items you clearly don’t wear as much as you thought!

The last pile is for Poshmark. I’ve been on Poshmark for about three years and have made over $3000 simply from selling clothes that I don’t wear anymore. Poshmark is sooooo easy to use and the only time consuming work you have to do is take good pictures of the item. Download the app, make an account, and get posting. The clothes you put in this pile should be in mint condition or NWT. The better brand name and the more current the style, the more likely it is to sell. Once an item sells, you take it to the post office, package it up (FOR FREE) and send it on its way. Or, if you have packing materials at your house, you don’t even need to go to the post office! You can just print the label and drop it in your mailbox. DONE & DONE. Easiest money I’ve ever made AND I’m getting rid of stuff.

Here are some of my Posh tips and tricks!

  1. Re-use mailing bags from previous purchases to send out items. Turn them inside out and viola! You have a new bag to use to ship! If you do this, you won’t even need to go to the post office. Print out the label, attach it to the bag/box and drop it in your mailbox.
  2. If you don’t have any old bags or boxes saved up to use, you can order priority mail boxes from USPS for FREE! Yes. FREE! Same thing with these – no need to go to the post office. Click here to be directed to the USPS shop.
  3. Use stock photos as the cover photo for your items. Stock photos attract MUCH more attention than ones you take yourself. If you remember the name of your item, google it and then take some screenshots of the item from the website. If you don’t remember, look at the tag that usually has material and washing information on it. You should find a style number most times. Enter this into google and your item will (hopefully) pop up. Google is very smart, so if you enter a few details about the item, you will more than likely find pictures for what you are selling.
  4. Download Pixelcut. This is for items that you cannot find the stock photos for. Pixelcut will remove the background of your item to make the photo look professional! Fair warning – you are only allowed to edit a minimal number of items for free. I ended up paying for more because it was cheap and the app was really benefiting my sales on Posh.
  5. Download the ClosetMate app. This lets you share 25 items at one time! Sharing is SO important on Poshmark to make sure your items are at the top of everyone’s feed. However, sharing items one by one is so tedious. This app literally changed my life. I have made so many more sales because of it.
  6. Start your prices higher than what you expect to get from the item. There’s a possibility that someone will actually pay a good price for it. But more importantly, it gives you the chance to DROP your price. When you drop your price, likers get a notification and are reminded about your item. Also, they think they are getting a better deal, when this was the price you planned on selling it for in the first place.
  7. Lastly, join Posh communities! There are tons of Facebook groups or Instagram accounts that you can follow to get the latest tips and tricks. You will be a part of a group of people who are willing to share your items and give them more exposure!

Cleaning out is lowkey super satisfying and a fun activity, so pick a time to do this and look forward to it! You will feel so good and can have more room and money to spend on things you’ll actually wear.
